a home-grown team has paid off for the turks
trabzonspor may be new to the big-time soccer scene in turkey, but they have eight players in their first-team pool who are, or have been, members of the turkish international squad, and at least four trabzonspor players are expected to be capped for the world cup qualifying mathes in which turkey are involved.
the turkish club, which in the main finds and grooms its own talent from players in the city and surrounding townds and vilaghes, has built up a reputation for tremendous loyalty and team spirit, and there are 18 players who proudly call themselves members of the firs-team squad.
names such as senol, turgay, necati, kadir, cemil, hüseyin, ahmet and ali kemal may be unfamiliar to football fans in this country, but in turkey, these are all players who have established tehemselves on the international scene. and of the 18 man squad, no fewer than 14 were born in trabzon, while the other four come from istanbul.
goalkeeper senol in one of the local booys who made good, and this 24 years old, still studying at university, gained youth international honours, initally. trabzonspor also have a 19-year-old keeper named tekin, who is another local-born player.
the back-four men have collected two dozen caps between them. there is turgay, trabzon-born and 22 years old, who has been chosen for turkey five times; there is necati, again a local, and this 23-year-old has eight caps. and there are skipper cemil, aged 25, who has been capped twice, and kadir, a 24-year-old, with nine caps, both kadir and cemil are natives of trabzon.
trabzonspor can perm from half a dozen players for the midfield scene of operations. and only two of them -eyup and unsal- are not local players. they come from istanbul. eyup is 25, and was capped three times at amateur-international level; unsal is a 21-year-old.
the other four players are bekir, aged 28; ali yavuz, who is 27-years-old and hails from the township of kastamonu near trabzon; engin, aged 22, who is a student; and selahattin, who is 25.
two of the six players who can operate as forwards come from istanbul -they are ahmet and serdar- while the remainder are trabzon men. serdar, aged 25, won youth-interrnational honour and has just completed his studies; ahmet also aged 25, is a full international.
huseyin, a 24-year-old, has eight caps to his credir and ali kemal, who usually wears the no. 9 jersey, is another international who, at 25 is rated one of the top players in turkey. necmi, aged 28, and cemil altun, aged 27, complate the squad.
trabzonspor may make some changes in their line-up, as they attempt to contain liverpool and gold on to the single-goal lead the forged in the first leg, and they decide on a formation which has a mainly defensive outlook.
the turks are manged by a former international star, ahmet suat ozyazici, and he will doubtless have worked out a plan to try to stop liverpool getting the goals they need, especially as trabzonspor have gained a reputaion for conceding few goals away from home.
but its likely that the turkish team boss will rely on yje players who, in the main, are regarded as first-team regulars senol, turgay, necati, kadir, cemil- ali yavuz, bekir, huseyin, ali kemal, necm and ahmet, through there could be places for eyup and engin, if trabzonspor decide to pack their midfield.
whatever the turkish team formatiin, liverpool know the task that faces them-quite simply, it is to score at least two goals, without conceding one themselves. and on home ground, the players are confident that they can do this, and go through to the last eight of the european cup.

trabzonspor are a relatively new club in the turkish soccer scene, and have none of the glitter and fame, or the resources, of the three big istanbul clubs, fenerbahçe, galatasaray and besiktas which dominated for more than 40 years.
yet, despite his brief history, trabzonspor are now the most consistent soccer club in turket. they are the current league champions, of course, and they only just failed to clinch the double, losing to galatasaray in the cup final. but they won two other cups, accounting for both galatasaray and fenerbahce.
established in 1967, trabzonspor spent one year in the third division, won promotion to the second-then spent seven years before emerging as champions and joing the big-timers in the first divison.
they then smashes all known recors by winning the league championship the followinf year, and they have been heading the table this season.
managed by former turkish soccer star ahmet suat özyazici, trabzonspor owe their success to the loyalty of their players for their club colours (claret and blue).
the manager is from the city of trabzon, an eastern black sea town with a population of 200.000, where soccer has been main topic of conversation in cafes, clubs and barber shops for the past six years. almost every player is from the city itself or from surrounding towns and vilages, and the club's strenght lies mainly with the concept of producing star players from among local lads, rather than buying lavishly from other clubs.
trabzonspor are rated the most skilful and attractive side in the turkish first division and, despite the players lack of european soccer experience, they are a difficult team to beat, in front of their own fanatical suporters.
after their 1-0 victory in the first leg, they will come to anfield hoping to hold liverpool to a draw.

liverpool go into tonight's game knowing that they have to wipe out a one-goal deficit, and score sufficent goals themselves to progress though to the last eight of the european cup. it is demanding task-but one which. i know, the players will not shirk; and i am confident that our supporters will give them every encouragement.
on behalf of the club, i welcome the players and officals of trabzonspor on their first visit to anfield, and i would also like to extend a warm welcome to the u.e.f.a delggate, and to the match officials.
this is another importane european occasion for liverpool, and once agian it is my duty to remind our supporters that it is vital for the good name and reputation of the club to be upheld. i am sure that we can count on ypur co-operation, in this respect.

trabzonspor aş pulled off "a miracle" by beating liverpool fc in 1976 and as the black sea team revisit anfield, coach şenol güneş told uefa.com "a big upset" may be looming.
as trabzonspor aş head for anfield for thursday's uefa europa league play-off opener against liverpool fc, memories are flooding back for coach şenol güneş. the 58-year-old played in goal for the black sea side when – fresh from becoming the first team from outside istanbul to win the turkish title – they met the same opponents in the 1976/77 european champion clubs' cup second round.
a cemil usta strike gave trabzonspor a 1-0 victory in the first leg, but while they lost the second 3-0 on merseyside, güneş tells uefa.com "a big upset" could be in the offing this time – provided, of course, they bring their wet-weather boots.
uefa.com: what did that 1-0 win against liverpool in 1976 mean to turkish football?
şenol güneş: we had beaten a world football institution. it gave us great belief and we were very proud. that victory was like a miracle back then. trabzonspor were a newly emerging club on the european stage, while liverpool were a big club from england – from the birthplace of football.
uefa.com: what do you remember about playing at anfield?
güneş: it was exciting and fascinating. in those days turkish football was not so advanced in terms of infrastructure and facilities. the first steps were just being taken. early in the morning of the matchday, we went to see the state of the pitch. it was sunny and the surface was dry. however, when we got to the stadium in the evening, it was wet and slippery. we were 3-0 down within 20 minutes. back then we didn't know people watered pitches before the game – we saw that for the first time at anfield. the boots we had were not suitable for a wet pitch.
uefa.com: how good was that liverpool side?
güneş: liverpool were the best team in europe that year. they had excellent players – goalkeeper ray clemence and midfielder terry mcdermott were leading names, while kevin keegan was fantastic. tools of mass communication were not so widespread in those days and trabzon is quite a long way from liverpool, but we knew bob paisley was a well-respected coach.
uefa.com: can trabzonspor spring a surprise 34 years on?
güneş: we aim to cause a big upset. we are playing against a team that perhaps ought to be in the uefa champions league, but nowadays you can get any result in football. in order to be a big club, you need to work hard enough to spring surprises. that's what we are doing. it's like a final for us. i desperately want my team to carry on in europe. if we can reach the group stage and get to the last 32, i will consider that a success.
uefa.com: trabzonspor took the turkish cup last year and recently won the turkish super cup: what are the targets for this season?
güneş: winning the title is, of course, one of our targets, but especially fighting for a champions league place. i want trabzonspor to be an ever-present in european competition. we want to be a competitive brand that gets impressive results, to be able to use our home-grown players, to play brave, entertaining and attacking football with principles.
